The third mosque visited on this journey was the Mayfair Jumma Masjid. Many years ago, I can remember as a kid, people would tend to joke that this Mosque was termed, the Mayfair Sun. Sun represented a major luxury hotel group in South Africa. This came as no surprise, it is situated in the Crown Mines area of Johannesburg alongside Mayfair.
Many years back if you were a local Indian Muslim, Crown Mines was thee address to live in to show that "You Have Arrived" in life. Nowdays, if you live in Greenside, Emmarentia or Houghton, then you "have arrived"The Mosque follows the traditional Mosque structure, which includes a dome and minaret. Another interesting observation, during the 1990s,this mosque was attended predominantly by South African Indian Muslims. On the date of visit, one could easily observe the changing demographics of the neighbourhood in that a significant number of worshippers are of Somalian and other North African origin. I wonder where did all the old Musalees went to. Why did they move out? Where have they gone? This visit was trully enlightening for me as it reflected a very non-racial, cosmopolitan atmosphere,
