The second mosque visited was the Sultan Bahu Mosque in 4th Avenue, Mayfair. When, I first moved to Johannesburg, and heard about this Mosque, my first thoughts was, "Sultan Bahu, Who is This Dude". A quick Google search indicated that this was a Sufi Saint who has a shrine based in Pakistan. This mosque, as far as I am aware is the only Mosque which practices Salaami in the Mayfair area on Fridays after Jummah Salaah.
At first glance, the outside structure, similar to the Baitun Noor Masjid does not replicate the traditional mosque which includeds a visible dome and minaret. This structure was previously a Christian Church, which has now been converted to a Mosque to meet the needs and changing demographics of the area as set out in Day 1. The interior of the Mosque, when one visits for the first time seems a bit overdone but is extremely beautiful with intricate artwork and includes a small library, childrens orphanage, a hall mainly used for weddings and Mouloods and a Madressah. Under the banner of Sultan Bahu, there are other programmes which are run including, a Dialysis Clinic, Womans Home, Cataract Clinic and Drug Rehab. Almost above the Mimbar is a huge and distinctive light fitting which tends to stand out and gives you a few chills of " I hope I This Does Not Fall On Me". At first glance I was certain I have seen it before somewhere else. A review of other pictures in my collection revealed that this is a replica of light fittings installed at Masjid Un Nabwee. When I first moved to Johannesburg, I read my first Jummah here. What was really cool was that, I got to see many of my old University colleagues (Ex KZN Dudes)but another observation made then and till this day, is that the Mosque is only at full capacity on Fridays, or Saturdays and Sundays when people have weddings. The remainder of the week it is more or less emply. Another observation is that unlike the Mosque visited on Day 1, one cannot but notice the absence of a cosmopolitan vibe. The absolute majority of people I have seen are local Indians and dudes from the sub continent.
