This page was started during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. On this basis, the first project is a religious one. South Africa has approximately 1 million (1.5% of the Total Population)Muslims of all different racial groupings. The current racial demographics indicate that the majority of Muslims in the country are of Indian and Malay origin. Since the early 1990s, South Africa has seen an influx of Muslims from countries to the North of South Africa, the Middle East and the Indian Subcontinent. In all major cities, Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town, we are blessed in that Mosques can be located in many suburbs allowing the average Muslim to complete his or her Salah. In this regard, compliments must be given to our ancestors for establishing a foundation of Mosques, Jamaat Khanas, Madressas, Halaal Bodies for past and future generations. Compliments must also be given to the leadership and practices of the African National Congress, the ruling party of South Africa. While I do concede, that this party has it faults, but hey who is perfect, the average Muslim is free to practice his craft without fear or fervour. The purpose of the project is to display at least 15 Mosques in Johannesburg to display the different cultures that exist and its impact on the community. The end result is an increase in our shared appreciation for the Muslim cultural heritage in Johannesburg.
