The Mohamadaan Mosque, commonly known as the 23rd Street Mosque. At first glance from the outside, the complex looks to be in bad physical shape. As one can see, alongside the main Mosque building is another structure with no roof and seems decayed. It has been like this for the past 6 years that I have driven past or visited.
The Mosque itself however is in good shape and is well maintained. My own personal viewpoint is with multi million Rand mosques being recently developed, some portion of the funds used should go towards maintaining existing infrastructure. I also visited this Mosque during Asr time, and noted that most of the people had walked to the Mosque from the surrounding areas. People were also extremely humble and extended greetings of "Salaams", Where are you from etc". An interesting story I can recall was, I was once told, if one is looking for a Mosque that keeps to time for Jummah, this is the place to be. I remember we had a course once and took a few out of town people there expecting to be out by 110 pm, the latest. We ended up only coming out a 130 causing some irritation amongst my guests. However I have been told this does not happen all the time. Overall, this was a really great experience and is definately worth a visit.
